Around 130 players participated in the 19th European Go Congress in Krems, not far from Vienna, along the Danube. For the first time there were participants from Poland, Greece and Italy. Jьrgen Mattern became for the seventh time European Champion with eight wins out of eight games. With this win he earned a ticket to Japan. The first round started directly with the cracker between the undoubtely strongest players of that time.

Other Events
The Challengers Tournament, which also was played in four groups, was won by Kuhar (Yug, 1k). He beat Ralph Hempfling (Ger, 1k) in the final.
Bruce Wilcox, a pioneer in computer Go, gave a lecture in programming computer Go. He was claiming that his program, which would be ready in two and half years, could solve 1 dan problems.
The Nihon
Ki-in sent a group of twenty amateur players, headed by Kobayashi Chizu (4p), to the Congress. They played a match
Europe-Asia, which was won by Europe (
13-7).
During the General Meeting of the EGF a new board was chosen. Geoffry Gray (Gbr) became new President. Ing. Zickbauer (Aut) was elected as new Secretary. K.E. Peach kept his position as Treasurer and A.P.H. Schilp was elected as honorary
Vice-President.
A new regulation was agreed upon the participation in the European Championship. The defending champion and the winner of the Master Tournament could play and each country could select two participants of at least 4 dan. The tournament would be played as round robin if no more then eleven rounds had to be played. In the other case it was up the organisation of the Congress to select a system.
