Other Events

This year there was for the first time mention of a Weekend Tournament and a Rengo Tournament.
The Weekend Tournament was won by Ronald Schlemper, followed by Chandler (Gbr).
The Rengo Tournament was an event with teams with hilarious names like, 'Le san-san va frapper', 'Ever Hopefulls'. The 'London Weakies' even composed their own battle song. Here you find the third stanza (music: Offenbach; text Francis Roads):

Oh we're rather weak on openings,
and our middle game is poor;
And the way we play our yse,
is the worst you ever saw;
But when we're in a lost position,
then we just take our usual stance;
We rip them off, we rip them off,
We rip them off, we rip them off,
We show them we're the weak-kneed dans.

(Was this the start of the Song Parties at the European Congress?) Anyway, the battle songs didn't help against the violence of 'The reading Weak Group' (John Diamond, Matthew Macfadyen, Andrew Daly – 3.33 dan average), which won the tournament.

Iwamoto Kaoru was present the first few days of the Congress, with a public game commentary on the second game of the Honinbo Match between Ishida and Takemiya as highlight of his visit.
