For the second straight year the three leaders in the World Amateur Go Championship crossed the finish line neck-and-neck. This year's top trio was Yasuro Kikuchi of Japan, Lee Yongman of Korea, and Han Qiyu of China. Lee beat Han in round four, Kikuchi beat Lee in round five, Han beat Kikuchi by half a point in round seven, and none of these three lost to anyone else. Their relative standings had to be sorted out by SOS points (sum of opponents scores), of which Kikuchi had garnered 44 while Lee and Han had 42 each. Kikuchi therefore took first place. Lee was awarded second place by virtue of having beaten Han. Although the top European amateurs bowed to Kikuchi, Lee, and Han, they held their own against everyone else. Matthew Macfadyen of Britain defeated Kan of Hong Kong in the final round to capture fifth place. Laurent Heiser of Luxembourg beat Kou Yupang of Chinese Taipei and Mun Yongsam of D.P.R. Korea to finish fourth. Mun, by the way, is a thirteen-year-old boy who has reached the strong five-dan level mainly by studying game records. He bears watching: in his first taste of world-class competition he polished off Joong-Ki Kim of the U.S.A. and Jurgen Mattern of Germany. The tournament was held at the Japan Convention Center, an imposing steel-and-glass complex located on the east side of Tokyo Bay not far from Tokyo Disneyland, where many of the players unwound after the action.
