The 1997 Vienna Fujitsu GP saw 60 participants from 10 (12) nations. (Depending on how you count Chinese or US players that live in Vienna, but have no Austrian citizenship). In the top group (4dan and stronger) 21 participants started (from round 2 on 22 participants), so we decided to play 6 rounds (according to EGF-guidelines).

Lazarev Alexei (6dan) from Russia won all his six games, so his 1st place was uncontested. Radek Nechanicky (CZ) lost only against Lazarev, so he made 2nd place. Surprisingly Bernd Scheid (5dan) from Austria won against Bogadanov Victor (6dan) from Russia in round 5. That he forgot to mark his win on the list caused some discussions before the last round. According to EGF-guidelines he would have lost this game. But at last organisers (referees) decided not to put full weight of punishment to him and so he was able to share 3rd place with Vladimir Danek in the end.

Remarkable: Petr Nechanicky (the youngest of the “Nechanicky Go-clan”) made 5 wins as 2 dan (might be interpreted as qualification for 3-dan) and 4 wins of Diana Köszegi from Hungary (13 years old) who started as 2-dan too.
