The Tengen title is decided in a best of five match. The challenger is decided in a large knockout tournament starting with about 40 players. The 20th edition will give you some idea of the tournament structure. Up to the 5th edition the title was decided by a match between the finalists of the knockout main tournament. Tengen is the term used to designate the center point on the goban, and it is also the name of a Japanese top title. A lot of Japanese tournaments are sponsored by newspapers. In this case a number of regional newspapers carry the event.
Each year the title holder is challenged by the winner of a preliminary tournament. The winner of the best of five final receives 13 million Yen in prize money.
